THAILAND: After 30 years, Thailand is set to start sending workers to Saudi Arabia again.
A labour cooperation agreement is slated to be signed between Thailand and Saudi Arabia soon – the first after a 30-year hiatus that began in the 1980s when relations between the two nations stalled.
Following the deal, ministry representatives are expected to tour workplaces and businesses that may need Thai workers. Engineering, construction (especially welding roles), and healthcare are the most relevant sectors in Saudi Arabia.
Currently, only 1,300 Thai workers in Saudi Arabia are employed as technicians and household staff, according to government data. The Kingdom used to be a popular destination for more than 300,000 Thai workers before the 1980s.
