Singapore working standards improved in 2021: report

SINGAPORE: Employment standards are on the rise, according to the latest Employment Standards Report by the Ministry of Manpower.

The annual report tracks the overall number of employment claims and appeals from workers against their employers. These dropped significantly in 2021.

According to the report, there were 2.59 appeals or claims per 1,000 employees in 2020. That fell to 1.73 issues per 1,000 employees last year.

There were also far fewer incidents of salaries being withheld or not paid. Of the salary claims lodged with the Ministry in 2021, 95% of the employees fully recovered the money owed. This was up from 92% of successful claims in 2020.

Finally, the number of wrongful dismissal claims slid from 0.39 per 1,000 employees in 2020 to 0.27 per 1,000 employees last year.
