Recruiting difficulties as tourism industry gets set to reopen

VIETNAM: Hotels and travel agencies are scrambling to hire employees and amplify personnel training, following new government advice that country will reopen to tourists from March 15.

Hotel Job, a known Vietnamese tourism recruitment website, has posted 150 open positions since early February. It has also received 1,000 resumes for management and housekeeping roles.

Director Le Quoc Viet of Santa Company, which owns Hotel Job, claimed that website traffic continues to rise as recruitment demand has doubled, compared to the same period pre-pandemic.

Travel firms are also quickly boosting their human resources to address the expected high demand among resorts and hotels in tourist destinations, such as Ha Long, Hoi An, Sa Pa, and Phu Quoc.

One representative of the resorts said this was proving to be a major HR challenge across the country.

"After two years, many high-quality personnel have switched to other fields and have refused to return to their old jobs," the anonymous representative told local media. "It will be difficult to recruit highly qualified tourism personnel compared to before the pandemic."

One travel company cited that only 30% of its staff had remained since before 2022, so they were hurrying to add more personnel for the peak summer season.

Several other tour operators have reported a shortage in manpower to meet the expected demand of the coming travel season. As a result, receptionists, managers, and other senior staff have taken turns to clean rooms, and serve guests.
