PHILIPPINES: Government rightsizing is not necessarily about reducing the number of workers in agencies, Department of Budget and Management Secretary Amenah F. Pangandaman has advised.
The term, currently in extensive use as new President Ferdinand Marcos Jr establishes his administration, may also mean strengthening an agency by giving it additional budget and personnel.
Pangandaman says that the education and medical sectors could be "upsized" as part of the process. Part of the strategy involves taking personnel who would otherwise be displaced and transferring them to these expanding agencies.
The incoming President has already instructed the Cabinet to look into their respective departments for possible rightsizing projects, as well as positions made redundant by digitalisation efforts.
Pangandaman says savings from the rightsizing could be allocated to health care, agriculture, infrastructure, and other priority programmes.
