LAOS: Beginning 1 August, the monthly minimum wage across Laos will increase to LAK 1.2 million (USD 80), from the existing rate of LAK 1.1 million (USD 73).
The hike was announced by the Lao National Labor Committee on July 8, and comes amid a surge in inflation. The 23.6% increase in prices recorded this year is a 22-year record.
However, the extent of the implementation of the new minimum wage is unclear.
Radio Free Asia has reported that if workers and business owners agree on alternative pay and other benefits, the minimum wage on its own will not be enforced.
