HR comes out on top after a difficult year: Laurence Smith

2021 IN REVIEW: While last year brought up many issues for the HR profession, one positive outcome was that it did prove how versatile HR teams and leaders can be. That was one of the key conclusions that digital transformation expert Laurence Smith shared on the most recent episode of The HR Agenda.

The global labour market had to quickly figure out how to incorporate working from home, keep up with vaccination regulations in the workplace at the same time keep business going amidst a labour shortage, Smith said.

He noted that the focus shifted for HR everywhere during the pandemic. "HR has been looking a lot more outside in, traditionally apart from recruiting HR has been internally focused and we've become more aware of the external environment," he advised.

Another issue the HR profession had to deal with in 2021 was a series of critical labour shortages, and Smith offered some creative advice for those caught up in the talent wars.

He says firms should consider breaking the old models of tying staff all to a full-time contract. Smith advises that firms can have a percentage of employees with a full-time contract, while the rest can be freelance workers. He further added that organisations should look at how to make employees want the firm to be part of their portfolio, and use this approach to change and improve the labour shortage issue.
