China repatriates labourers from Vietnam and Myanmar

SOUTHEAST ASIA: China has repatriated a large group of trafficked workers from Vietnam and Myanmar after a factory raid in the southern province of Guangdong.

Dozens of Vietnamese migrant workers and four Myanmar nationals were found working illegally at a factory in the province. According to Myanmar sources in China, labour agents had smuggled these workers beyond the special economic zones where they have some working rights.

Hundreds of thousands of people from Myanmar work in China, yet no formal agreement has been made between the two countries regarding the handling of migrant workers.

Currently, China allows Myanmar nationals to work in the border towns of Dehong and Jinghong without a work permit. They must secure express permissions, however, if they want to work in the rest of China.
